Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about HDX Player
Getting Started/ Pre-Sale Question
Where can I buy a HDX Player?
You may purchase directly from our webstore or from any of our authorized reseller listed in our "where to buy" page.
Why do I need an HDX player?
If you have a large media collection and would like to view it on your plasma/projector/home theater system. This is one of the most cost-effective ways to avoid investing in a HTPC. You can stream music, pictures and most importantly videos. The new generation NMT supports H.264 video which is a compliant 1080p HiDef codec used by Bluray and HD-DVD.
What do I need in order to play back from HDX Player
There are several streaming options available for HDX play back.
- Install Myihome provided by Syabas - http://www.networkedmediatank.com/download/myihome.html
- Install Llink provided by Lundman - http://www.lundman.net/wiki/index.php/Llink
- Connect to your PC via NFS / SMB network connection.
- Connect to your NAS via NFS / SMB / UPNP AV.
- Install an internal HDD/external HDD.
- Hook up an external DVD ROM (for non-css encrypted DVD only)
How do I connect my HDX player to my home theater system?
- You need to have a coaxial cable and plug it into any of the coaxial inputs of your AVR (Audio Video Receiver). Make sure that your HDX Player is setup to output as Digital PCM for whatever audio codec. For example, AC3 needs to be setup to Digital PCM for your AVR to detect as AC3 signal.
- The HDX player supports an HDMI connection as well, if your AVR supports HDMI, you can connect to it directly.
- There is a 2 channel RCA stereo output available for your 2 channel amp or simply hook it up to your TV if it does not have HDMI connection.
Do I need to install an internal hard disk in order to use HDX Player?
- No, you can stream movies/music/pictures from your PC or NAS (network attached storage).
- You can attach an external USB storage device which contains the media.
Network Performance and Support
What are the supported file system for HDX Player?
File system read supported: EXT2/3, NTFS, FAT16/32, HFS+
File system write supported: EXT2/3.
How should I configure the network for my HDX player?
Under current firmware releases you really should only use "manual IP" mode and not "automatic".
There is a bug where the NMT doesn't correctly store your network's supplied DNS (domain name server) IP addresses and so the internet services (Media service portal, saya TV, youtube, etc.) will probably NOT work correctly if you don't enter your own "manual IP" settings.
From main screen choose setup -> network -> mode...change to "manual IP"...click on [save].
Next choose [configure IP] button and check the IP numbers in each field. For the two DNS fields you should use either the DNS IPs supplied by your ISP (Internet service provider) or the internal IP address of your home router.
What type of network sharing does the NMT built-in NAS support?
SMB, FTP, NFS
What streaming speeds should I expect from the various network connection methods?
- SMB: ~38Mbps
- NFS: ~33Mbps
- HTTP: ~42Mbps (same clip peaks at 47Mbps)
- USB HDD: ~ 42Mbps
- USB DVDROM (8x): ~42Mbps
- Internal HDD: ~42Mbps
Note that filetransfer from PC USB host to HDX USB internal HDD is well in excess of 300 Mbps (30 MBytes/s).
What is the best network connection for playing back high bitrate content?
Looking at the above chart, HTTP will be the preferred method for streaming. However, HTTP protocol does not support .iso/.ifo format at the moment. The next best choice is NFS.
Why can't I view my DVD .iso file using MyiHome?
Myihome does not support DVD playback. Please use SMB/NFS for playback instead.
I am experiencing video/audio dropouts when playing some high bit rate contents.
- Try using an NFS/HTTP connection. They are the streaming protocols that offer the highest streaming speed.
- Make sure that you do not have a problem with your network connection. If you are using WIFI, try switching to a wired connection to test it out.
How do I add SMB/NFS shares?
- Setup SMB share: Goto Setup->Media Server->Network Share, you can browse your SMB network and add the path to the list, or manually enter the path to your SMB share, e.g. smb://<hostname or ipaddr>/foldername
- Setup NFS share: Goto Setup->Media Server->Network Share, type in the full path to your NFS share, e.g. nfs://<hostname or ipaddr>:/foldername (note the colon after hostname
With firmware 01-15-080330-14-POP-402 or newer you can select the protocol (TCP or UDP) used for the NFS connection:
- "nfs://" = udp
- "nfs-tcp://" = tcp
Some firewalls, including the WinXP firewall, will block critical parts of udp NFS server connections, even if correctly configured. If you experience a "No content found" error when using udp, try switching to tcp.
How do I get NFS/SMB/UPNP AV Server functions from the NMT?
You need to install an internal HDD and the NMT apps in order to get the following servers:
- SMB server
- NFS server
- UPnP AV server
- myiHome server
- FTP server
- Torrent downloader
The default username/password for remote access and FTP is
username:ftpuser password:1234.
The default username/password for SMB access is
username:nmt password:1234
the share name is share
Does the HDX player support wireless streaming?

Audio/ Video playback
Help, my video files are not playing? Is this a bug or faulty player?
Not all video files are encoded to work with the NMT, depending on the encoding of the media. You should use Mediainfo or Avinaptic to check. Being able to play on your PC does not necessarily mean that the HDX will be able to play back the same file flawlessly. If you need help, post the clip info in the forum for advice.
How do I play back FLAC using myiHome ver4.7 ?
You will have to edit the following XML files in myihome and add FLAC extension
C:\Program Files\myiHome\webapps\ROOT\xml\music.xml C:\Program Files\myiHome\webapps\ROOT\application\music\xml\audioext.xml
How do I select different audio tracks for my AVI file?
Select your track, then use Time Seek to activate the changes
Does the HDX support subtitles?
Yes, currently the HDX support subtitles in the following format.
- SRT
- SMI
- SUB
- SSA
You need to rename the subtitle file to be the same name as your movie and place it in the same folder.
Does the HDX player support subtitle languages other than English?
Currently the HDX player provides support for simplified Chinese, and some other European languages.
Why doesn't my subtitle display?
Please make sure that it is in the format that HDX supports.
The subtitle file must be in the same folder as the movie file.
The name of the subtitle file must be the exact same as the name of the movie except for the extension.
Subtitle language (Setup>Preferences>Subtitle language) must be set to anything but None. Remember to save the setting.
Does the HDX support embedded subtitles in mkv?
Yes!
- Ensure that the embedded subtitles are supported by HDX, for example: .srt, .sub, .smi and .ssa
- Turn on a subtitle by pressing "subtitle" button on the remote control

How do I back up my DVD so that it can be played back by the HDX?
- You need to backup your DVD into .iso format
- If your movie is backed up in .img format renaming it to .iso may help.
- DVD support in .iso is only supported via NFS/SMB connection at this time. It will not work with Myihome. If you are having judder or audio drop out problems with SMB share. Use NFS instead.
Why can't I view my DVD .iso file using MyiHome?
Currently MyIhome does not support DVD playback. Please use SMB/NFS for playback instead.
My movies are encoded with .DTS . Why is there no sound?
On the HDX player there is no DTS downmixing to analog stereo. The HDX player passes through DTS signal via S/PDIF or HDMI digital audio to your AVR (Audio Video Reciever) for decoding. It will not down mix to stereo due to license cost. You can get a cheap DTS decoder or re-encode the movie to AC3, which is supported by decoding to PCM.
What is the best method for backing up my DVD collections? (Single layer and Double Layer)
One way is to just copy the files from DVD to your PC or NMT hard disk.
Another way is to convert the DVD to an ISO file.
The HDX1000 will play an .iso file or a video_ts directory as it were a DVD, regardless of size or single or double layer.
- Single Layer DVD
- read this ImgBurn guide on how to create a single layer ISO on your hard drive.
- Double Layer DVD
- read this ImgBurn guide on how to create a double layer ISO on your hard drive.
There are quite a large number of other tools that do a similar job.
After pressing the zoom button, the OSD does not go away by itself.
A possible work around is to hit the "enter" button on the remote to remove the OSD manually.
DTS audio keeps dropping out or stutters during playback.
This can be resolve by remuxing the .mkv file with gdsmux found in haali media splitter.
This can also be resolved by using DelayCut if the above does not work. DelayCut is incorporated in Heartwave's AudioConverter select the clean DTS option.
How do I use playlist files via myiHome?
Make sure "Scan Windows Media Player/Winamp playlist" is selected under Edit>Preferences>Music. Then browse to your myiHome share or watch folder on the HDX. Directories and all playlist files except for .pls files will be listed first in alphabetic order, followed by audio files and .pls files in alphabetic order. Note that .pls files are considered Internet Radio links and are best suited for this task.
When I play DTS wav files, I hear only noise
Make sure your receiver can decode DTS audio, that HDX is connected to the receiver via a digital optical cable, and that you set the Audio Setup options the following way: "Surround=5.1", "DTS=RAW". If you still hear noise, then your HDX "digital volume" (set via the remote) is probably not at its default value - try changing it as the DTS file is playing; once you hit the default level (38/49 for the older/newer firmware), you should hear the music playing.
How do I change the theme?
- Obtain _theme_.zip from release package or download from http://www.popcornhour.com/download/_theme_.zip
- Unzip and modify existing graphics as you wish, but maintain the dimension and filename
- Modify .config file in root of _theme_ folder to change the colors of the text, color attributes is same as in HTML, e.g. RRGGBB, #RRGGBB, "green", "white-alpha", "black"
- Copy entire _theme_ folder to the NMT harddisk's Photo folder
- Reboot (Power + Eject) and new theme will be loaded
Note: Screensaver images ssvr1.jpg ~ ssvr4.jpg must be less than 20Kbytes, due to current limitation.
